Diving into DEIB-AR

Diving into DEIB-AR

Welcome to the inaugural blog post on DiversityNL’s website! Today, we’re diving into the world of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racism (DEIB-AR), but with a Canadian/sporting twist. But first, did you know that curling stones weigh between 38 and 44 pounds? That’s almost as heavy as the issues we’re about to tackle!

Did You Know?

  •  According to a study by the Conference Board of Canada, increasing the representation of visible minorities in leadership roles could boost Canada’s economy by $8.9 billion annually.
  • Indigenous peoples in Canada face an unemployment rate that is nearly double the national average.
  • A report by the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion found that diverse teams are more likely to outperform non-diverse teams by up to 35%.

Trying to explain DEIB-AR can sometimes feel like trying to explain the rules of curling to someone who’s never watched it before. You’re sliding stones on ice, sweeping frantically, and yelling at each other—all while wearing funny shoes. It’s a lot to take in, just like the complexities of systemic racism or the challenges of creating an inclusive workplace.

Why DEIB-AR Matters:
Diversity is like having a variety of stones on the ice—each one brings something unique to the game. Equity ensures that everyone has the right size broom. Inclusion means everyone gets a chance to sweep. Belonging is when everyone feels like they’re part of the winning team. And anti-racism? Well, that’s like making sure the ice is fair and everyone plays by the same rules.

As we continue this DEIB-AR journey together, let’s remember that change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes practice, perseverance, and a willingness to learn from each other. So, let’s grab our brooms and sweep away the barriers to inclusion, one stone at a time!
